Stop! Let’s Talk… Biases, Wreckers, and Ults!

Written by Heaven King | Posted on 7 February 2024

Have you ever heard these crazy words like ‘bias’ or ‘wrecker,’ or even ‘ult’? What does any of this mean in the KPOP world? Essentially, the word ‘bias’ means the same as it would in any other context; ‘wrecker’ is your second most biased; and ‘ult’ is short for the term ‘ultimate.’

What Is A Bias?

A bias is your favorite member in a group. This is the person that catches your eye every time you watch their content. You can have multiple biases in a group if you’d like, or you can have just one. There’s really no rules to this, despite what other people might tell you. Having a bias doesn’t mean you solely collect their photocards. It also doesn’t mean that you dislike the other members of any particular group. Your bias is your comfort person. They’re the first person you recognize if you’re just getting to know the group. They’re the one you can relate to. The one that can make you smile or laugh on bad days. Of course, anyone can do this if they’re from your ult group, but we’ll talk about that later.

What Is A Bias Wrecker?

A bias wrecker is really close to a bias. They’re just your second favorite of any group. As said before, you can absolutely have more than one bias in a group. I know I do. Sometimes, though, it’s fun trying to stay loyal to your one bias, but there’s still that other someone that keeps pulling your attention. This is where your bias gets a little wrecked. We thought we had it all figured out with our one favorite, but honestly, we just can’t resist that other member. And that’s completely okay! Just like biases, you can have as many bias wreckers as you’d like.

What Is An Ult?

Ult is short for the word ultimate. This title can pertain to either groups or individual idols. Your ultimate group or bias surpasses all of the other groups that you consider yourself a fan of. You give more time and dedication to your ult. This is very common, and it isn’t something to feel guilty about. It does not mean that you love your other groups any less. When you think of the word K-Pop, what’s that one group that pops in your mind? Who’s that one idol always on the tip of your tongue? It’s always okay and encouraged to show appreciation to your ult because it shows your gratitude for the jobs that they do. You may also find similar communities who share ults with you.

Are You Still Confused?

Let’s use my ult group, SEVENTEEN, as an example.

SEVENTEEN isn’t the group that initially got me into K-Pop, and they aren’t the ones who brought me back to K-Pop, either. I honestly had no idea who they were when my coworker asked if I wanted their photobooks out of someone’s garbage, but I said yes anyway. If we take a look at the photo, my ult bias of SEVENTEEN is DK, the one with the orange hair. On one hand, I could say I have one bias and twelve bias wreckers. However, on the other hand, I could say I have seven biases and six bias wreckers. Do you know how many members are in SEVENTEEN?

Picking a bias shouldn’t be hard or scary. If you wanted, you could bias the whole group! This is my current dilemma with NCT. When you really get into a group, let your bias come to you, as weird as that sounds. You won’t even realize it until you find yourself seeking them out in everything you watch. The last thing I’ll say is that biases, wreckers, and ults CAN change! Once you have one, you do not have to stay married to them. This is supposed to make you happy, and your sources for happiness can fluctuate all the time. Once again, this is my current dilemma with NCT. They’re really fighting for that number one spot, and they’re kind of winning!

Do you have any biases, wreckers, or ults? Let me know and let’s talk about it! Next time, we’ll talk about concepts and lore!
